누구의 죽음이든 나와 그대의 인생을 그만큼 단축시키는 것이 아니겠소
왜냐하면 우리 모두는 나도 그대처럼 인류에 속하고 있기 때문이니
그리고 인류란 어차피 죽어야 할
우리 인간들의 짧은 인생들이 이어져 있는 연속이 아니겠소
그러니 나는 당신에게 말하노니
저 조종(弔鐘) 소리가 누구의 죽음을 알리는 것인지
알아 보려고 굳이 사람을 보내지 마시오
그것은 저 종소리가 그대의 죽음을 애도하는
조종소리가 될 수도 있기 때문이오
